Rare, 1943 British Air Ministry issued Airspeed Oxford Mk XIIID Altimeter

The Airspeed Oxford played a significant role in helping pilots and aircrew successfully transition from single engine trainers to dual engine transports, fighters and the larger two and four engined bombers such as the Avro Lancaster and Handley Page Halifax.

With identical instrumentation, controls and flight characteristics of its larger fighting cousins, the Airspeed Oxford was exported to most Commonwealth nations with Canada receiving the largest orders to equip its Empire Air Training Scheme flight schools.

This Mk XIIID Altimeter was installed in the co-pilot's position of the Airspeed as well as the heavy Short Stirling Bomber and Short Sunderland Coastal Patrol.

Working on the aneroid principle and referred to as a 'simple' altimeter, it was calibrated according to isothermal law which assumes a constant 10 degree C temperature at all heights. Unfortunately its margin for error increased the higher it went and a manual course computer table was used to establish a true figure.

By the end of 1940, these Altimeters were being replaced across all operational aircraft but remained in use as a secondary instrument in the co-pilot and observer's position in the Airspeed, Short Stirling and Sunderland.

This Airspeed Oxford Instrument listed comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.
