The Arado Ar 196 was probably one of the most underrated but versatile and robust WWII maritime patrol aircraft put into operation by German forces and served in almost every theatre of war.
From sea rescue, long-range, ship-launched reconnaissance, to medical evacuation, naval attack and bomber interceptor, it was widely liked by naval pilots for it ease of handling and manoeuvrability both on the water and in the air.
It was designed and purpose built for the rough conditions of the North Atlantic and for ease of servicing under adverse conditions.
Along its fuselage and tail fin area and both above and below its mono plane wings, the Arado’s aluminium skinned frame was a dotted with myriad of hatches and access points enabling mechanics and engineers quick access to all control, electrical and fuel areas.
This rare and original Arado Ar 196 Access Hatch was located under both the port and starboard wings midway between the aircraft’s leading edge and the outer pontoon float support.
With its push button spring release, it gave mechanics instant access to the undersides of the Arado’s 20 mm MG FF wing cannon’s triggering mechanism and electrical looms.
The push bottom locking release is still operational and the button still retains some of its red paint whilst the hatch's aluminium surfaces display fragments of its underside paint scheme amongst the salt water staining and corrosion patina.
This is an amazing and extremely rare example of a unique piece of WWII German maritime aviation and mounted on its 100yr old hand-crafted Mango Wood Stand, with a highly detailed 1/72 or larger 1/48 custom built and hand painted scale model of the Arado Ar 196, would take pride and place on the shelf of any aviation enthusiast.
