The Boeing B-17’s primary electrical system was 240 V DC, sourced from 4 x 200-amp engine driven generators and 3 x 24 V batteries which were connected in parallel with the four engine-driven generators.
The DC power circuit also included four voltage regulators and reverse-current relays, 3 x battery solenoids, 4 x Ammeters (one for each of the four 200 amp engine driven alternators), and a volt meter, which were located on the pilot’s control panel on the lower port cockpit wall.
The master ignition switch which turned off all battery power and grounded the ignition system to stop each engine, was located on the central control stand between the pilot and co-pilot.
The B-17 also carried a secondary power source - by way of 2 x 400 W 225 V. AC inverters, a 3 V AC transformer and an auxiliary 2,000 W petrol engine driven generator.
