Rare Canberra Bomber Smiths 6A/3855 Fuel Gauge

The first Canberra bomber was delivered to RAF 101 Squadron in May 1951 and its versatility and endurance quickly saw additional orders being placed with English Electric by 15 other countries including Australia and the United States.

The Canberra’s twin Avon 109 engines delivered a maximum speed of 933 km/h with a cruise range in excess of 703km/h and a ceiling of 35,000ft.

Initially equipped with two large integrated wing tanks and smaller fuselage tank, its range could be further extended with two 250 gallon jettison-able wing tip fuel tanks giving the bomber a total fuel carrying capacity in excess of 1874 gallons.

Over its service life, a total of 1376 Canberra bombers were built with 451 of those built under licence in the US and designated the B-57 Canberra and another 48 built under licence in Australia as the Mk.20.

This Smiths 6A/3855, fuel gauge was one of three mounted vertically at the centre of the Canberra’s secondary flying panel directly above the aircraft’s observer/bombardier's ‘nose crawl through’.

With a highly detailed 1/72 or 1/48 scale model of the Canberra Bomber perched atop its hand crafted mango wood stand and laminated Fact Sheet, this would make a fantastic gift for any aviation enthusiast.

This Canberra Bomber Instrument comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.
