Air Ministry AM & Crown stamped Left/Right Beam Approach Indicator

One of the main navigation aids for British medium fighter/bombers such as the De Havilland Mosquito and the heavy bombers such as the Halifax and Avro Lancaster was the aircraft’s Radio Direction Finding system (RDF).

Mounted to the bottom right of the Mosquito's main flying panel and just below the Engine Magneto switches, the Left/Right Beam Indicator displayed the signal direction received by the aircraft's Marconi R1155 Radio Receiver which could be tuned via the Mosquito's Directional Finder (DF) Loop rotatable antenna to the home airfield’s transmitting frequency.

The signal transmitted from the airfield was effectively a homing beacon, enabling the aircraft to follow the radio beam back to its origin, with the RDF delivering a constant signal to the visual L/R Beam Approach Indicator.

The two floating, cross-hair needles of the L/R Beam Approach Indicator provided the pilot with a visual indicator of the aircraft’s position in relation to the radio transmission directing him to turn either left or right to stay on course. This L/R Beam Approach Indicator bears the Air Ministry ‘AM & Crown’ with a Ref No: IOQ/2

The De Havilland Mosquito Left/Right Beam Approach Indicator is one of the early versions of this instrument, with a combination metal case rear section and bakelite front with the Air Ministry & Crown moulded face. Later model cases and fronts were all bakelite to speed production.

This de Havilland Mosquito Instrument comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.
