Known as the Douglas Dakota by the British, the American designed and built Douglas C-47 Skytrain was undoubtedly the workhorse of allied aerial logistics during WWII and well into later postwar conflicts such as Korea and even Vietnam.
One of its most valued attributes was both its range and versatility.
Fitted with a large cargo door, reinforced floor, hoist attachment and long-range tanks, the C-47 was used to transport troops, cargo, and wounded with over 15500 produced by the end of 1945.
During the invasion of Sicily in July 1943, C-47s dropped 4,381 Allied paratroops, while more than 50,000 paratroops were dropped by C-47s during the first few days of the invasion of Normandy, France, in June 1944.
The C-47 Skytrain could carry over 202 gallons of fuel in each of it's two Main Tanks and 200 gallons ea. in its two Auxiliary Tanks located in either wing.
Marked: Left Main, Right Main, Left Auxiliary, Right Auxiliary, the aircraft's tanks were monitored by a 4 part display fuel gauge that allowed the co-pilot to rotate between the 4 primary tanks, flipping the revolving tank dials to display the fuel level for each.
Manufactured by the US company Liquidometer of New York, this is original, war-hardened Douglas C-47 Skytrain 4 x Fuel Tank Indicator is a rare collectable of an iconic aviation veteran of WWII.
