DOUGLAS SBD DAUNTLESS CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE GAUGE

While one of the oldest carrier-launched aircraft of the USN fleet in the Pacific, the Douglas SBD Dauntless was arguably one of the most successful torpedo dive bombers on the carrier flight line.

Highly manoeuvrable and well armed, the Dauntless was instrumental in sinking or damaging a number of Japanese light aircraft carriers and heavy cruisers during the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Battle of Midway and during the Guadalcanal campaign.

Launched from US carriers, four squadrons of SBD's attacked and sank four Japanese aircraft carriers during the Battle of Midway disabling three of them in the first six minutes of engagement and then severely damaging two straggling heavy cruisers securing their reputation for sinking more enemy shipping in the Pacific War than any other Allied bomber.

The Weston Electric Corp BU Aero US Navy 88-1-12650 Weston Electric Cylinder Head Temperature Gauge was installed in the SBD’s lower instrument panel, just in front of the control column.

This WWII instrument is in remarkable condition for a 77 year of veteran of the war in the Pacific and still bears its USN stamp on the rear of its casing.
