Rare operational F-86 Sabre Attitude Horizon Indicator

The F-86 Sabre jet first entered service with the USAF in 1949, joining the 1st Fighter Wing's 94th Fighter Squadron and became the primary air-to-air jet fighter used by the Americans in the Korean War. Until the introduction of the F-86 Sabre, the new swept-wing Soviet MiG-15 had been outperforming all UN-based aircraft with devastating effect. In response, three squadrons of F-86s were rushed to the Far East. Early variants of the F-86 could not out turn, but they could out dive the MiG-15, although the MiG-15 was superior to the early F-86 models in ceiling, acceleration, rate of climb and zoom.

In 1951, the Australian Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) secured a licence agreement to build their own F-86 Sabre swapping the US built General Electric J47 for the more powerful Rolls-Royce Avon RA7 engine - known as the Avon Sabre.

Installed in the USAF F-86 Sabre and the Australian CAC AVON F-86 Sabre, the Attitude Indicator Type J-8 MIL-I-5133A was mounted above the aircraft's rate of Climb Indicator and to the right of the Sabre's Gyro Heading compass Indicator.

The small knob in the left corner adjusts the center horizon line to the pilot's perspective. The right hand knob, when pulled, cages the gyro and returns the horizon to center line. Both knobs are fully operational although the unit requires a 12v charge to orientate the Climb/Dive ‘ball’ correctly.

** The model depicted above is the 1/48 large scale Australian CAC Avon F-86 Sabre but purchasers can opt for one of either 3 different USAF configurations and colour schemes or 2 versions of the Avon Sabre - all with options of wheels up or down, airbrakes open or closed and cockpit open or closed.

This F-86 Sabre Instrument comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.

* Note that this F-86 Sabre Instrument is pictured with a 1/48 scale model rather than the standard detailed, but smaller 1/72 scale. Click on the ‘Model Upgrade' option at the top of this page for the larger 1/48 scale.
