The Focke-Wulf Fw190’s main fuel tank gave the new generation Luftwaffe fighter it an operational range of just under 560 miles. This could be greatly extended with the addition of either one 300l drop tank mounted directly below the cockpit or two 300l drop tanks mounted under each wing.
Much like the drop tanks fitted to the Bf 109, their addition to the Focke-Wulf significantly reduced its airspeed and handling qualities and were jettisoned at the first sign of enemy fighters.
Manufactured by the German DBU Works, the central Cap cast markings read 'KRASTSTOFF' or 'FUEL' with the wording 'Beluftungsventil' or Ventilation Valve' in raised text around the cap at the base.
Made from an Electron magnesium, the German Deutche Benzin-Uhrin (DBU Works) produced two types of Fuel Caps, vented and unvented but used the same casting for each.
Primary aircraft fuel tanks on both the Bf109 and the Focke-Wulf Fw190 required a ventilated fuel cap, so five small holes were drilled into the middle of the casting and a small spring loaded padded washer pressed into the recessed housing beneath.
Even though labeled as 'ventilated', fuel caps without the hole and valve modification had no ventilation and were installed at the top of the 300l aluminium drop tanks carried by both the Bf109 and the Focke-Wulf Fw190. Secured by two 8mm studs which were screwed down over the cap's arm cutouts, drop tanks required air pressurisation to transfer the fuel up into the aircraft system and so, they featured the 'sealed' cap version as seen here.
This is a rare example of a Focke-Wulf Fw190 Ventilated Fuel Cap and still has its holding change ring attached.
This Focke-Wulf Fw190 collectable comes complete with detailed 1/72 or larger 1/48 Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of collectable on aircraft.
