Rare Gloster Meteor, Smiths 6A/2136 Flap Position Indicator

This Gloster Meteor Smiths 6A/2136 Flap Position Indicator was mounted on the left of the pilot's main flying panel adjacent to the Flap and Under Carriage levers.

The Gloster Meteor was the first British jet fighter and although developed to counter the Luftwaffe's new and deadly Messerschmidt 262 jet fighter, it only saw limited action in the closing months of the war as it was not allowed to fly outside UK airspace for fear of it being shot down and falling into enemy hands.

It did however manage to shoot down 14 of the German V2 Flying Bombs after taking over the role from the RAF's Typhoon and Tempest fighters.

During its reasonably long service life (for what was a first generation jet aircraft), the Meteor saw numerous modifications and changes to its RAF mission and was exported to a number of Commonwealth countries including Australia.

Due to the urgency of getting it into the air in the closing months of the war, there was no time for individually tooling and the development and installing of instruments specific for the Meteor.

Instead, many of the blind flying panel instruments such as the Air Speed Indicators, Altimeters, Artificial Horizons, Climb and Descent Indicators and RPM gauges were simply pulled at of the most advanced and fastest propeller driven fighters the RAF had at hand - namely the Hawker Typhon and Hawker Tempest.

This scavenging of existing instrumentation for new aircraft continued well into the early 50's with many post-war aircraft such as the Sea Fury sporting WWII panel instruments.

This Gloster Meteor Flap Position Indicator however is one of the few instruments that was specifically designed for the Gloster Meteor and carries its distinctive narrow, vertical, compact design.

Mounted in its 100yr old Mango Wood display stand with engraved plaque, Fact Sheet and highly detailed 1/72 or larger 1/48 scale custom built model of this iconic jet fighter, perched atop its removable magnetic arm, would make a fantastic gift for any pilot and aviation enthusiast.

This Gloster Meteor Instrument comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.
