Whilst the Gloster Meteor’s arrival in the skies over Europe did little to influence the final outcome of WWII, advancements in radar technology saw it stay on as a primary jet interceptor with the RAF and the Australian RAAF as well as Argentina, Egypt and Israel.
Serving in regional conflicts including the Korean War with the RAAF, the Gloster Meteor had a chequered safety record with over 890 Meteors being lost with the RAF (145 of these in 1953 alone) resulting in the deaths of 450 pilots.
With the arrival of the jet fighter age, safe bailouts became a significant challenge for aircraft designers and it was not until the introduction of the Martin Baker ejection seat and its retro fitting into later models of the Gloster Meteor that pilot fatalities began to fall.
Even so, the Gloster Meteor had phenomenal speed and climbing ability for one of the first jet fighters to enter operational service.
This Gloster Meteor Sperry 6/A3849 Mk3C Artificial Horizon Indicator is in remarkable condition for an instrument of the Cold War era and features the British Air Ministry ‘Broad Arrow’ marking on the outside dial of its face and a service stamp of April 1956 on its rear metal casing.
Installed at the top of the Meteor’s main flying panel, this Gloster Meteor Recovery Curios Collectable, mounted in its 100yr old Mango Wood display stand with engraved plaque, fact sheet and highly detailed 1/72 or larger 1/48 scale custom built model of this iconic jet fighter, perched atop its removable magnetic arm, would make a fantastic gift for any aviation enthusiast.
This Gloster Meteor Instrument comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.
