This is a rare Searchlight Control Unit which was mounted on the starboard side of the Grumman S-2F Tracker cockpit - the first purpose-built, single airframe anti-submarine warfare (ASWA) aircraft to enter service with the US and Australian Navies.

Between 1967 and 1984 the RAN operated two Squadrons of S-2E and S-2G variants, based at HMAS Albatross in Nowra and as part of the Carrier Air Group aboard the HMAS Melbourne.  

The Grumman Searchlight Controller activated and directed a 70-million-candlepower searchlight mounted on the starboard wing.

Mounted on the window ledge on the starboard side of the cockpit and operated by the co-pilot, the powerful search light was essential for nightime search operations.
