Incredibly rare Grumman TBF Avenger early model, Liquidometer EA-010-1, 4 x Tank Fuel Indicator

Replacing the ageing Douglas TBD Devastator, the Grumman TBF Avenger soon became the workhorse torpedo bomber of the US fleet in the Pacific and could be configured to carry either one Bliss-Leavitt Mark 13 torpedo, a single 2,000-pound (907 kg) bomb, or up to four 500-pound (227 kg) bombs.

With a 30,000 ft (9,000 m) ceiling and a fully loaded range of 1,000 miles (1,600 km), it was better than any previous American torpedo bomber, and better than its Japanese counterpart, the obsolete Nakajima B5N "Kate". Later Avenger models also carried radar equipment for the ASW and AEW roles.

In its observation mode, a 270 gallon auxiliary drop tank storeed in the vacant Avenger bomb bay, could be used in place of a drop load which significantly extending its patrol area.

Ordinarily the TBF relied on its 3 self sealing fuel tanks. The main tank carried 141 gallons with the left and right tanks carrying 80 gallons each.

Mounted to the lower right of the pilots main flying panel, this early version of the TBF fuel gauge indicated fuel quantity in four tanks: left, right, and centre wing tanks, and the bomb bay droppable tank, in concentric scales respectively starting from centre axis.

A Fuel Tank Indicator switch was located above and the pilot switched it to any of the 4 tanks and their contents were displayed in the Liquidometer Fuel Indicator below. Later TBF fuel tank indicators featured 4 separate circular gauges mounted on a single instrument to aid clarity of view.

This is a rare and battle-hardened veteran of the War in the Pacific, installed on an early TBF Avenger and mounted in its beautiful, hand crafted 100 yr old mango wood stand, this Liquidometer, TBF Avenger bomber fuel tank indicator would look fantastic with its custom built and airbrushed 1/72 or larger scale 1/48 model TBF perched atop its removable display arm.

Combine this with a detailed, high quality, laminated Fact Sheet about the instrument and the TBF complete with a photo of the instrument in the Avenger cockpit and you have the perfect gift for any aviation enthusiast.

This Grumman TBF Avenger Instrument comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.

* Note that this TBF Avenger Instrument is pictured with a 1/48 scale model rather than the standard detailed, but smaller 1/72 scale. Click on the 'Model Upgrade' option at the top of this page for the larger 1/48 scale
