Mounted on the underside of the Grumman TBF Avenger's fuselage between the rear of the bomb bay and the lower rear-facing gun position, this WWII Red Recognition Light is one of three (others being Yellow/Amber & Green) unit identification, flush-mounted fuselage lights.
Each light was wired to a Recognition Lights Panel mounted towards the rear of the aircraft’s main electrical panel on the starboard cockpit wall.
Using the ’Steady' position, the Avenger pilot could preset the Identification lights to display a predetermined combination of Red, Green & Amber depending on the mission briefing or switch to the ‘Recognition Light Keying Switch' which allowed him to signal a flashing combination by depressing a spring-backed, red light key sender button.
During mission briefings,
TBF Avenger pilots were advised of the coded colour series for the day. This enabled the identification of either friendly or enemy aircraft by the correct coded colour transmission upon approach of other aircraft or returning to the carrier.
