The heaviest single-engined aircraft of WWII, the TBF Avenger (or TBM for General Motors built versions) incorporated the new Sto-Wing ‘compound angle’ folding-wing mechanism designed to maximise storage space on aircraft carriers.
It also featured a new and extremely powerful 1900hp Wright R-2600-20 Twin Cyclone, fourteen-cylinder, radial engine, which gave the Avenger a speed of 271mph with a flight range of over 1000 miles.
The TBF's RPM in 100’s is indicated on the outer scale, whilst RPM in 1000’s is indicated in the inner window at 9 o'clock. As the engine speed increased, the large pointer rotated clockwise.
Passing the 12 o'clock position, the numbers in the small window would rotate and indicate the RPM in 1000's. This is a ‘sensitive’ tachometer in that it provides more precise resolution of the engine speed vs earler versions with a single pointer and an additional internal speed ring for the full RPM range.
With a service tag dated 3/8/47 this generation of of tachometers went onto to be installed in the carrier-launched USN Douglas Skyraider which eventually replaced the Helldiver in the postwar years immediately follwing the end of hostilities.
This is a rare and battle-hardened veteran of the War in the Pacific, installed on an early TBF Avenger and mounted in its beautiful, hand crafted 100 yr old mango wood stand, this General Electric USN BU Aero Mk V RPM gauage, would look fantastic with its custom built and airbrushed 1/72 or larger scale 1/48 model TBF perched atop its removable display arm.
Combine this with a detailed, high quality, laminated Fact Sheet about the instrument and the TBF complete with a photo of the instrument in the Avenger cockpit and you have the perfect gift for any aviation enthusiast.
* Note that this TBF Avenger Instrument is pictured with a 1/48 scale model rather than the standard detailed, but smaller 1/72 scale. Click on the 'Model Upgrade' option at the top of this page for the larger 1/48 scale
This Grumman TBF Avenger Instrument comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.
