Mounted on the underside of the Grumman TBF Avenger's fuselage between the rear of the bomb bay and the lower rear-facing gun position, this WWII Yellow/Amber Recognition Light is one of three (others being Red & Green) unit identification, flush-mounted fuselage lights.
Each light was wired to a Recognition Lights Panel mounted towards the rear of the aircraft’s main electrical panel on the starboard cockpit wall.
Using the ’Steady' position, the Avenger pilot could preset the Identification lights to display a predetermined combination of Red, Green & Amber depending on the mission briefing or switch to the ‘Recognition Light Keying Switch' which allowed him to signal a flashing combination by depressing a spring-backed, red light key sender button.
During mission briefings,TBF Avenger pilots were advised of the coded colour series for the day. This enabled the identification of either friendly or enemy aircraft by the correct coded colour transmission upon approach of other aircraft or returning to the carrier.
With its plug, bulb and wiring still attached and mounted on its 100 year old mango wood display stand, complete with a highly detailed 1/72 or larger, 1/48 scale model of this iconic USN torpedo bomber perched above on its removable magnetic arm, this Recovery Curios Original Aviation collectable also comes with a detailed colour printed and laminated Fact Sheet.
