With its repowered Rolls-Royce Avon 207 turbojet engine, the Hawker Hunter could reach a ceiling of 50,000ft with a maximum speed of 623 mph at 36,000ft and 715 mph (Mach 0.94) at sea level.
Its Ekco ARI 5820 nose mounted ranging radar provided interception telemetry data to its computer assisted gunsight during air-to-air combat allowing the pilot to trigger his 4 x 30 mm ADEN revolver cannons in their removable gun pack blisters.
The Hawker Hunter could also be configured to carry a wide range of under-wing armament on its 4 hard points including:
4 x Matra rocket pods (each with 18 x SNEB 68 mm rockets) or 32 x Hispano SURA R80 80 mm rockets
Together with its 4 x AIM-9 Sidewinder Air-to-air missiles or 4 x AGM-65 Maverick Air-to-surface missiles plus variety of unguided bombs, the Hawker Hunter was a formidable interceptor.
However, with the increasing threat of Russian nuclear bomber attacks on Britian during the height of the Cold War, the Hunter's limited ceiling and slower climb rate compared to the new English Electric Lightning, significantly reduced its first response capabilities and its primary role was switched to that of ground support.
Installed just below the Hunter’s Reserve Altimeter at the lower right of the flying panel, this Mk4 6D/2237 Oxygen Contents gauge is an original Cold War veteran and mounted in its 100 yr old mango wood display stand with engraved plaque, it also features an amazingly detailed 1/72 or larger 1/48 hand-built model of this Cold War interceptor which can be perched atop the display on its removable magnetic arm.
Complete with a full colour, laminated Fact Sheet on the Hawker Hunter and its instrumentation, this is an amazing aviation gift for any pilot or aviation enthusiast.
