One essential qualification for all RAF Hurricane pilots, was to be able to read and send morse code at a minimum speed of 15 words per minute.
Mounted on the starboard wall of the Hurricane's cockpit, just below the spare gunsight bulb rack and connected to a small tear-drop just aft of the aircraft’s IFF antenna, the Morse Code Key was used for air to air communication with other fighters nearby when radio silence was required.
Transmitting morse whilst controlling a high powered fighter and scanning the skies around you for enemy aircraft would have been a challenge for any pilot but with the firing button on the left of the control column yolk and triggered by the pilot’s right thumb, sending morse code also meant swapping hands to fly the Hurricane with the left whilst communicating with the right.
The original Morse Code Sender Keys were all metal but by mid 1940, the more easily produced bakelite models were being fitted into all Hurricanes and Spitfires. This model is one of the first runs of the new bakelite moulded units.
This is an extremely rare example of an early Hurricane Morse Code Sender Key and would make a fantastic and totally unique and treasured, original aircraft collectable from a bygone era of one of the world’s most iconic fighter aircraft.
As far as can be determined, this Morse Code Sender Key seems to have all its components and appears in full working order. Imagine combining this with the Hurricane Morse Code Lamp Aircraft Collectable, adding a globe and battery and sending your own Hurricane Morse Code! Send a note through our contact page to discuss a special deal for them both.
