Rare Junkers Ju 87 Vented Oil Filler Cap

The Junkers Ju 87’s Jumo 211 J-1 was an inverted V12 cyclinder, two-stage supercharged engine which delivered over 1420 hp. This gave the Luftwaffe dive bomber a maximum speed of nearly 400 mph.

To compensate for the tremendous, near-vertical dive forces on its air frame and engine, the Jumo engine was supported by four oversize engine mounting arms ,running through its asbestos lined firewall into the aircraft’s main fuselage framing.

Started via a hand crank in combination with an electrical inertia starter or direct from an independent ground power source, the counter-clockwise rotating engine drove a clockwise rotating VS 11 propeller with heat dissipated through a pair of radiators mounted under the wing’s centre section, close to the trailing edge.

Filled via an oil filler port under a small flush-fitting hatch on the aircraft’s port-side just aft of the engine, the engine's lubrication system included a large oil radiator mounted under the lower part of the engine cowling and connected to the compressor intercooler.

The lubrication system included an oil radiator mounted in the lower part of the engine cowling behind the oil radiator and connected to the compressor intercooler. This was fed from the aircraft's main 55lt oil tank mounted low behind the firewall and two smaller tanks above and below the engine. Oil circulation was maintained by the engine-driven geared oil pump.

Manufactured from Electron magnesium by the German DBU Works, the central cast markings read ’SCHMIER’ or ‘LUBRICANT’ with the wording ‘Beluftungsventil’ or Ventilation Valve’ in raised text around the cap at the base.

Unlike Auxiliary Fuel Drop Tanks which were prepressurised to power the fuel up into the aircraft and were left unvented, primary aircraft oil and fuel tanks on the Ju 87, Bf109 and the Focke-Wulf Fw190 required ventilated caps to prevent oil/fuel lock.

To achieve this, five small holes were drilled into the middle of the universal DBU Works casting and a small spring loaded padded washer pressed into the recessed housing beneath.

The ’S’ shaped arms of this DBU Works Oil Filler cap slide under two large wing nuts on their 8mm studs which were then screwed down tight to secure the cap.

Electron Magnesium was highly susceptible to corrosion pitting which can be seen on the underside of this WWII Luftwaffe veteran Oil Cap.

Mounted on its 100 yr old Mango Wood stand with a highly detailed hand crafted and airbrushed model of the iconic German dive bomber - the Junkers 87 ’Stuka’ plus an informative Fact Sheet, this would make an extraordinary and highly valued, original memento of WWII Luftwaffe air power for any aviation enthusiast.

This Ju 87 collectable comes complete with detailed 1/72 or larger 1/48 Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of collectable on aircraft.
