B-26B’s were fitted with auxiliary fuel tanks which gave the two engined bomber a range of over 1150 miles with a full bomb load and over 1153 US gallons of fuel.
Operating in every theatre of war, the B-26 gained a reputation as a robust and reliable bombing platform that could sustain a considerable amount of damage and still return its crew to base, but it was not an easy airplane to master.
While it’s tricycle landing gear gave the pilot a wide panoramic view, its powerful engines but relatively short wingspan called for a high speed landing approach to avoid stalling - which was almost the complete opposite to that of the larger bombers such as the Liberator and B-17 which could almost be ‘floated’ down to meet the runway.
With a single engine approach, the B-26 pilot had to keep the remaining engine turning over at the very top of its power band leaving very little room for error. The aircraft literally pancaked into the tarmac exerting tremendous forces on its tricycle gear which often collapsed under the heavy impact.
The B-26B Marauder could carry over 1153 US gallons of fuel in its two primary and two auxiliary tanks mounted in both wings.
Marked: Left Main, Right Main, Left Auxiliary, Right Auxiliary, the aircraft's tanks were monitored by a 4 part display fuel gauge that allowed the co-pilot to rotate between the 4 primary tanks, flipping the revolving tank dials to display the fuel level for each.
Manufactured by the US company Liquidometer of New York, this is original, war-hardened B-26B Marauder 4 x Fuel Tank Indicator is a rare collectable of an iconic aviation veteran of WWII. The primary dial turns as intended, with each revolving tank content plaque displaying except for the Starboard Auxiliary Tank which is missing its tag.
