Whilst often finding itself in combat and operational roles it was totally unsuited for, the Messerschmitt BF 110 finally came into its own when, equipped with the new German Lichtenstein FuG220SN-2 intercept radar, it took on the slower moving British night time bombers.
Guided to its targets by its intercept radar, onboard displays and ground control stations, the Bf 110 took a heavy toll on the slower moving Wellingtons, Halifax's and Avro Lancasters, often using its upward firing Schräge Musik off-bore gun system for shooting them down whilst passing underneath - clear of the bomber’s defensive gun positions.
British losses continued to mount alarmingly until effective radar jamming techniques were developed to counter the Bf 110’s Lichtenstein equipment.
With the aim of reducing weight whilst still retaining a high degree of strength, many Luftwaffe aircraft components such as rudder pedals, control columns and major mechanical linkages were cast in solid magnesium.
Whilst reducing overall aircraft weight and boosting performance, the magnesium parts were highly inflammable in a crash and also subject to serious surface pitting corrosion. As a result, it is extremely rare to find such a complete and excellent example of such original WWII German aircraft component such as this BF 110 Rudder Pedal.
Salvaged from a crash site by a US serviceman and although later resprayed, the BF-110 Rudder Pedal retains its prominent R8 3713 - 01 part and registration number on its underside along with its hinged linkages. On top you can still see part of the solid alloy foot retainer band which was a feature of the BF 110 Rudder Pedals, where other fighters such as the Bf-109 and The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 had leather or canvas strapping with a tightening buckle.
This is an extremely rare Luftwaffe artefact and combined with a beautifully finished Mango wood stand, engraved plaque, Fact Sheet and detailed scale model of the BF 110 atop, would make an incredible gift or conversational centrepiece or any home or office or study.
This Messerschmitt BF 110 Instrument comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.
