Rare Northrop P-61 Black Widow, Square D, Duel Engine Magneto Switch

One of the most effective and deadliest night fighters of WWII the Northrop P-61 Black Widow’s 2 × Pratt & Whitney R-2800-65W Double Wasp 18-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engines, produced over 2,250 hp each giving the inceptor a top speed of 336mph and a ceiling in excess of 33,000ft.

Produced by the Square D Company, this Type B-6 Duel Ignition Magneto Switch was installed on the lower left of the aircraft’s Port sidewall console, just in front of the duel throttle controls.

The B-6 ignition switch has two switches, one each for the left and right engine, and a master switch in the centre. The master switch is switched by pulling (ignition off) or depressing (ignition on) the centre post, intending to be able to kill both engines simultaneously.

Both switches turn easily to their respective positions and the ‘PULL’ knob at the top centre moves in and out as originally designed.
