During mission briefings, P-47 Thunderbolt pilots were advised of the coded colour series for the day. This enabled the identification of either friendly or enemy aircraft by the correct coded colour transmission upon approach of other aircraft or returning to a home airfield.
The P-47 Thunderbolt had three large identification lights under the starboard wing tip running Red, Green and Amber from the leading edge to the rear. Another White light was positioned under the radiator housing.
Each light was wired to a Recognition Lights panel or IFF Box, mounted on the bottom right of the aircraft's main flying panel, just below the manual Fuel Pump Primer.
Pilots could places the switches in the ’Steady’ position for continuous operation or in the ‘Key’ position for intermittent operation via the depressible ‘Keying Switch’.
