Rare, 1943 British Air Ministry issued Short Sunderland Mk XIIID Altimeter

This Mk XIIID Altimeter was installed in the co-pilot's position of the Coastal Command flying boat, the Short Sunderland  as well as the heavy Short Stirling Bomber and Airspeed Oxford twin-engined trainer.

Working on the aneroid principle and referred to as a 'simple' altimeter, it was calibrated according to isothermal law which assumes a constant 10 degree C temperature at all heights. Unfortunately its margin for error increased the higher it went and a manual course computer table was used to establish a true figure.

By the end of 1940, these Altimeters were being replaced across all operational aircraft but remained in use as a secondary instrument in the co-pilot and observer's position in the Short Sunderland, Stirling and Airspeed.

This Short Sunderland Instrument comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.
