The British Admiralty had long been keen on obtaining a more heavily armed and faster replacement for their carrier/slingshot Sea Hurricane’s but the Air Ministry had resisted claiming that all Spitfires were required for the defence of the British mainland.
Eventually, the Air Ministry relented and a small squadron of marinised Spitfires, now designated the Supermarine Seafire were delivered to the Admiralty in late 1941.
Despite initial problems with understrength undercarriages and a limited operational range the Supermarine Seafire was used with great success as a ground support and cover fighter for in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily and the Normandy landings.
Additional squadrons of Seafires joined Royal Navy’s Far East Pacific Fleet providing critical air-cover against the Japanese dive bombers and kamikaze attacks.
During the post war period the Seafire remained the Royal Navy's primary air-support fighter and saw action in the opening months of the Korean War before being replaced by the new, high powered Hawker Sea Fury fighter/bomber.
With a production date of 1949, this Air Ministry stamped Mk 9G 6/A3146 490kt Airspeed Indicator was installed at the top of the Supermarine Seafire's main flying panel adjacent to the aircraft's Artificial Horizon and just above the Altimeter.
