Designed in the mid-1930s as a two seater army light bomber/artillery spotter aircraft, the Westland Lysander carried two x .303 in Browning machine guns mounted in each wheel spat and operated by the pilot as well as a rear facing Browning operated by the observer/gunner.
With twelve small bomblets fitted to the outside of the aircraft's under-carriage spats, the Lysander struggled to defend itself during the opening months of the year and was soon relegated to coastal patrol and home duties.
For Britain's clandestine Special Operations Executive (SOE) however, the Lysander's rugged construction and extremely short take off and landing capabilities made it the ideal 'behind the lines' aircraft for dropping agents into occupied Europe and resupplying the local resistance fighters.
Powered by its Mercury XX 9-cylinder air-cooled radial engine, the Lysanders were flown by some of the most talented pilots of the RAF who often flew in total darkness, reading maps by a small cockpit lamp and looking for pinpricks of light below that might identify a resistance make-shift runway for a clandestine weapons drop or emergency agent extraction.
Manufactured by Manning Maxwell & Moore Inc, thisAN5770-1 Manifold Pressure Gauge was installed in both USAAF and RAF aircraft, and was mounted in the middle of the Lysander's port secondary flying panel, adjacent to the Brake Pressure Gauge.
Installed in an operational aircraft, this instruments rear casing still retains its protective gauze tape that was used to cover the instruments pressure hose intake from dust and dirt, after its removal from the aircraft for servicing.
