While the Westland Lysander had a maximum ceiling height of just under 22,000ft, like many other RAF aircraft during WWII, instruments like the Mk XIVA Kollsman Altimeter were commonly shared across a range of aircraft even though their performance specifications differed significantly.
It was not until the postwar era of the jet fighter that custom instruments, built to specific performance criteria started becoming the norm. In fact, many postwar aircraft such as the British Gloster Meteor and the Hawker Sea Fury still carried WWII instruments salvaged from fighters such as the fast reconnaissance PRX Spitfire and the Hawker Typhoon and Tempest.
Installed directly in front of the pilot's control column, the Lysander's Sensitive Altimeter displayed altitude up to 35,000 ft using 3 pointers.
The first and longest indicated 100's of feet, the second indicated 1000's of feet, along the outer scale, and the third and smallest indicated 10,000's of feet. on the inner scale. The knob is used to adjust the altimeter to the barometric pressure as displayed in the small window at the 6 o'clock position.
This Westland Lysander Instrument comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.
