Mounted just above the Wessex HC-2's Horizon Indicators, in the middle of the helicopter's instrument panel, the slip/inclinometer instrument informed the pilot whether the aircraft was side-slipping, skidding or in coordinated flight.
Featuring a ball sealed inside a curved glass tube filled with liquid to act as a damping medium, the indicator was in effect a spirit level with the tube curved in an arc rather than a straight tube and a ball standing in for the bubble.
The ball moved back and forth as it responded to the force of gravity and the aircraft's centripetal forces which moved the ball away or towards the centre of the indicator's curved tube depending on the aircraft's flight orientation.
When the ball was observed in the central postion the aircraft was said to be in coordinated or balanced flight. If the ball was observed on the 'wing' down side of a turn the aircraft was said to be slipping. If it moved to the 'wing-up' side of a turn, it was said to be skidding.
The aircraft's Horizon Indicator, located just below the Inclinometer, informed the pilot to the aircraft's nose up or down position in relation on the vertical axis relative to the horizon. In many aircraft, these two instruments are combined into a single display.
Mounted on their 100yr old mango wood display stand with engraved plaque and highly detailed large scale model of the Westalnd Wessex HC-2 helicopter perched atop its removable magnetic arm, the Slip/Inclinometer also comes with a detailed Fact Sheet telling the story of this incredible aircraft and the pilots and crew who flew it.
