Manufactured by General Electric, this rare Type DJII WWII Flap Position Indicator was installed in the US Curtiss-Wright designed C-46 Commando, twin-engined, heavy transporter.
The C-46 Commando’s rear-ward moving hydraulically operated slotted-wing flaps could be extended to 35° at any angle.
Similar to the B-24’s Fowler flaps which extended the wing area and lowered the aircraft’s stalling speed by increasing the incidence angle of the airfoil, the Commando’s wing flaps also featured a relief valve which enabled the flaps to retract automatically if airspeed exceeded 150 mph. Built-in equalisers provided for equal extension of the flaps.
Operated by two vertically extended leavers on either side of the pilot’s control pedestal the flaps could be extended to any angle up to 35°
Each flap control lever had four marked positions: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and FULL.
A spring-loaded stop halted the lever at the 1/4 position, requiring the pilot to push the backstop with his thumb to extend the flaps further.
A fixed stop at the FULL flap position provided for a maximum Flap travel of 35° but in an emergency, the backstop could be removed to enable a further extension to 45°
The DJII Flap indicator provided the visual information to the Flap’s position throughout the flight which was critical to the safe operation of the C-46 Commando given it was the heaviest twin-engined transporter in the USAAF
