Douglas A-26 Invader, Briggs and Stratton B5 Engine Magneto Switch

Whilst the Douglas A-26 received less than a warm welcome from USAAF squadrons operating in the SW Pacific, their European counterparts loved its speed and manoeuvrability and certainly its high calibre nose cannons.

Many pilots began throwing the A-26 around like a single engine fighter as they swooped in low in ground support missions. 

Its bomb carrying capacity was also impressive and over the course of the war in Europe, the A-26 flew over 11,560 missions, dropping some 18,050 tonnes of bombs with the loss of just 67 aircraft.

The Invader’s Briggs and Stratton Engine Magneto switch was mounted, tucked away at the top left of the port secondary flying panel just under the dash overhang.

Composed of two swing switches (one for each engine) it enabled the pilot to engage that engine’s starter battery or combine both in tandem. An extended Master On/Off Lever was located at the top of the Switch which could kill both engines simultaneously. 

All the Magneto Switches appear to be fully operational with all switches rotating easily between one or both battery sources and with its highly detailed, custom-built model of this USAAF twin-engined bomber/ground attack aircraft perched above its 100yr old Mango Wood display stand, its sure to be a treasured talking point for many generations to come.
