Original Grumman S2F Tracker Bendix Scintilla Ignition Switch

The Grumman S-2 first entered service with the United States Navy in 1954 with Grumman producing 1185 Trackers over the course of its operational life and a further 100 manufactured in Canada under licence.

Looking for a carrier-based
anti- submarine maritime patrol aircraft to replace its ageing fleet of Fairey Gannets, the Australian RAN acquired its first S2-E Trackers in late 1967.

The RAN Trackers joined 14 A4 Skyhawks as part of the Australian aircraft carrier, HMAS Melbourne’s new air group. With Trackers rotating between the carrier and the two land-based centres of HMAS Albatross and Nirimba in NSW and as well as coastal operations, the RAN Trackers embarked on regular deployments aboard HMAS Melbourne to Southeast Asia, Japan and the annual Exercise RIMPAC in Hawaiian waters.

The Trackers could stay in the air for over 9 hours which gave them an extensive patrol range with their fuel efficient and powerful twin Wright Cyclone engines delivering over 1520 hp each.

In the early years of operations, the Tracker’s Ignition Switches were mounted in the overhead panel between the aircraft's throttles but was later moved to the central flying panel at the top left of the radar scope.

With Trackers serving with over 8 of the world’s navies in a wide variety of configurations and operational roles, the Ignition Switches were often moved to accommodate different equipment and flying gauges.

All switches still rotate as designed on this early model S2F Tracker Bendix, including the 'pull-out' central engine stop.

Mounted in its 100 year old mango wood display stand and complete with its colour, laminated Fact Sheet, magnetic arm and detailed custom built model of this iconic martime patrol aircraft, this original Recover Curios avaition dispaly is the perfect gift for any aviation enthusiast.
