Rare 1949 Post War, Air Ministry 490kt Air Speed Indicator installed in the British and Australian carrier-launched Sea Fury turboprop interceptor and ground attack fighter.

The Hawker Sea Fury was one of the fastest turbo prop interceptor fighters and the last, to serve with the Royal Navy and the Australian Navy.

Based on the British Hawker Tempest of WWII, the Fury was fitted with the powerful Bristol Centaurus engine and equipped with four Hispano V cannons and was designed primarily as fleet air protection fighter but it was in its later configuration, the Sea Fury FB.II that it really came into its own as a close ground support fighter/bomber.

The Fury’s airspeed was further increased with the installation of the new Napier Sabre VII engine delivering almost 4,000hp and a top speed in excess of 422 kts in level flight.

With a heavily reinforced airframe and landing gear designed to resist the heavy shock of carrier landings, the aircraft proved to be an extremely successful export aircraft for the British with orders also taken from Burma, Canada. Iraq, Pakistan, Cuba and Egypt where it operated as a land based fighter/bomber.

One of the Sea Fury’s main claims to fame was its ability to punch well above its weight proving surprisingly effective against the Chinese MiG-15 jet fighter during the early stages of the Korean War. In late 1952 a Sea Fury of 802 Squadron launched from the British carrier HMS Ocean was credited with shooting down a MiG-15 becoming the first propeller driven aircraft to down the deadly Chinese jet fighter.

With a production date of 1949, this Air Ministry stamped Mk 9G 6/A3146 490kt Airspeed Indicator was installed at the top of the Sea Fury’s main flying panel adjacent to the aircraft's Artificial Horizon and above the Altimeter.

With its undamaged bakelite case and clear, scratch-free glass face, this Air Ministry 490kt Air Speed Indicator presents an amazing opportunity to secure a rare piece of Korean War aviation history from an operational Hawker Sea Fury.

Mounted on a stylish 100yr old Mango Wood Display Stand with engraved plaque and a highly detailed 1/72 or 1/48 scale model of this British ground-attack fighter/bomber perched above, on its magnetic display arm and detailed Fact Sheet, it’s an ideal gift for any aviation enthusiast.

This Hawker Sea Fury Instrument comes complete with detailed Scale Model, Mango Wood Stand & Plaque plus Printed Fact Sheet featuring photo of instrument in aircraft cockpit.
