P-51 Mustang 39B5435 Wing Tank Fuel Cap

One of the most outstanding features of the P-51 Mustang, aside from its superior manovourability and firepower, was its significant operational range.

With two wing tanks carrying 184 US gallons and a fuselage tank tucked behind the pilot of another 85 gallons, the aircraft had one of the largest operational ranges of any allied fighter but it was the addition of its two, droppable 110 gallon wing tanks that made it the primary USAAF bomber escort fighter.

The Mustang drop-tanks enabled the fighter to accompany the USAAF bomber streams both to and from targets deep within German territory whilst still allowing for fuel to roam ahead of the bombers to take the fight direct to the Luftwaffe fighters.

This P-51 Mustang wing-tank fuel cap still retains its red surface paint and markings and is an amazing survivor of this iconic WWII USAAf fighter.

The 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 scale, hand-built and airbrushed plastic models are available with a choice of two Squadron markings and camouflage as well as either in full flight mode with canopy open or closed, or landed mode with flaps and wheels down and canopy open or closed.
