The USAAF Type F1 Ammeter was installed in the iconic USAF fighter - the P-51 Mustang. The USAF had gambled on self-defending bombers for their daylight raids over German targets - it was to prove one of the most costly policies of the war with 137 B17’s being shot down in just two missions alone as the Bomber Group pushed deeper into German airspace beyond the range of escorting allied fighters. After experimenting with more
heavily armed B17’s, the P-47 Thunderbolt & P-38 Lightning, it was the highly maneuverable P-51 Mustang, with its 2 additional, 110-gallon drop tanks that provided the much needed aircover.
The USAAF Type F1 Ammeter was installed beside the pilots right knee on the P-51 Mustang’ electrical panel just below the canopy winch handle.
The Mustang’s 24v electrical system was supplied by a 34 amp hr battery located immediately behind the pilot and was charged by an engine-driven, 100-amp generator on the left hand side of its12-cylinder, Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V1650 liquid-cooled engine. Ground-based battery charging from an external power source was done via a plug on the right hand side of the fuselage.
