Rare P-51 Mustang RED Wingtip Recognition Light

Mounted on the underside of the P-51 Mustang’s starboard wingtip, this WWII Red Recognition Light is one of three (others being Yellow/Amber & Green) unit identification, flush-mounted lights.

Each light was wired to a Recognition Lights panel or IFF Box, mounted on the starboard cockpit wall just below the canopy of the P-51.

During mission briefings, P-51 Mustang pilots were advised of the coded colour series for the day. This enabled the identification of either friendly or enemy aircraft by the correct coded colour transmission upon approach of other aircraft or returning to a home airfield.

Pilots could place the switches in the ’Steady’ position for continuous operation or in the ‘Key’ position for intermittent operation via the depressible ‘Keying Switch’.

With its plug and wiring still attached and mounted on its 100 year old mango wood display stand, complete with a highly detailed 1/72 or 1/48 scale model of this iconic fighter perched above on its removable magnetic arm, this Recovery Curios Original Aviation collectable also comes with a detailed colour printed and laminated Fact Sheet.

The 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 scale, hand-built and airbrushed plastic models are available with a choice of two Squadron markings and camouflage as well as either in full flight mode with canopy open or closed, or landed mode with flaps and wheels down and canopy open or closed.
